As in 2016-2017 the smelting shop is launching multi-stage repairs and hearth replacements of the two furnaces currently in operation (N3 and №4) EAF №5 is going to reclaim their workload. In the longer term concurrent operation of three units will yield additional output and cut on converter matte cost price.
Deputy Chief Engineer in charge of Kola GMK smelting operations renovation Pavel Egorov says that EAF №5 will boast cutting edge technology, best-in-class power efficiency, automation, and output capacity with several notable design features, such as having improved containment, hence better environmental specifications.
EAF №5 is currently undergoing structural strengthening of metal frames in the construction area, installation of gas duct assembly on the furnace to gas and dust capture units section with simultaneous construction of a sluiceway. In February-March 2014 the smelting shop will receive the first batch of furnace components, and in summer the EAF №5 staff will receive training by the furnace manufacturer.
