Vtorchermet NLMK commissions new shredder at Podolsk
Vtorchermet NLMK (part of NLMK Group), one of the largest scrap processing networks in Russia, has commissioned a new high-performance shredder at the Vtorchermet NLMK Center site in Podolsk.
Designed for processing light and mixed scrap, the new shredder will improve the quality of raw materials supplied to NLMK Kaluga, our next-generation EAF plant, and NLMK Group’s other steelmaking plants. The resulting lower tap-to-tap time and energy consumption will improve the environmental performance of our steelmaking operations.
Equipped with a 4000 HP drive and capable of processing up to 100 tonnes of scrap per hour, the new shredder from Metso Lindemann GmbH will enhance the performance of our Podolsk site and improve the environmental efficiency of waste collection and disposal, and secondary resource recovery.
This upgrade is part of NLMK’s Technical Upgrade & Development Programme for its scrap processing division launched in 2011. The programme provides for doubling ferrous scrap processing in the Moscow Region to 800 000 tpa by 2016 vs. 2012.
This is Vtorchermet NLMK’s second shredder in the Moscow Region, characterized by a surplus of ferrous scrap (approx. 3 m tpa). The first one was installed at the Mytischi site in 2010.
Today shredders are the most advanced and high-performance equipment for scrap processing. They are capable of efficiently handling light scrap, including car bodies and white goods, by separating ferrous scrap from non-ferrous metals and non-metallics. Shredders allow recycling larger quantities of scrap and improving the quality of steelmaking raw materials.
Vtorchermet NLMK is a scrap processing unit of NLMK Russia Long (part of NLMK Group). Vtorchermet NLMK is one of the largest and well-equipped scrap collectors in Russia with a network of production sites in 34 regions across the country. Vtorchermet NLMK supplies ferrous scrap to NLMK Group companies. It can process over 3.5 million tonnes of ferrous scrap per year.
