Alexander Popov appointed Director General of OAO Olkon

Alexander Nikolayevich Popov has been appointed as Director General of the Olenegorsk Mining and Concentration Works (ОАО Olkon), part of the mining division of OAO Severstal, one of the world’s leading steel and mining companies, with effect from 22 March 2011.

Alexander Nikolayevich graduated from the Kuzbass State Technical University where he majored in Economics and Construction Management. He has been with Severstal since 2006. From 2006 to 2007, Alexander was the Director of Capital Construction at Kuzbassugol and between 2007 to 2009 he was the Director of Procurement at Vorkutaugol, another enterprise within Severstal’s mining division. Since 2009 Alexander has held the position of Director of the Vorkuta Transport at Vorkutaugol.

Vasily Alexeyevich Chernykh, currently Director General of OAO Olkon, will leave the Olengorsk Mining and Concentration Works on 21 March 2011 to become Head of the mining department of Severstal’s gold division. In his new role, Vasily will be responsible for open-pit and underground operations at eight mines in Russia, Kazakhstan and Africa.

The Olenegorsk Mining and Concentration Works (ОАО Olkon) is part of Severstal Resources, the mining division of OAO Severstal, one of the world’s leading steel and mining companies. The Cherepovets Metallurgical Works (also part of Severstal) is [a/the] major consumer of the Olenegorsk iron ore concentrate. In 2010, the Olenegorsk Mining and Concentration Works supplied 4.17 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate to its customers.

ОАО Severstal is an international steel and mining company whose shares are traded on the Russian Trading System (RTS) and at the London Stock Exchange (LSE). In 1993 it became a joint stock company. The Company specializes in the production of high value-added products and unique niche products. The company has operations in Russia, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Italy, France, the USA, and Africa. In 2010 Severstal produced 17 million tonnes of steel.
