By the end of 2011 the share of steel made in electric furnaces will reach 32.4%, 33.9% in 2015, and 39% in 2020; in converters: 58.7% in 2011, 61.6% in 2015, and 61.0% in 2020. Blast furnace plants will be totally eliminated in the ferrous industry. However, they may be retained at some enterprises of some other industries. According to the Strategy of Development of the Steel Industry up to 2020 by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation expected changes in the Russian steel-making industry will meet international trends.

Continuous casting machines will account for 85-90 % of steel products by 2015, and 97-99% by 2020. Flats output in the total flats and long products manufacture (exported billets for re-rolling excluded) will grow from 54.7% in 2007 to 58% in 2015 and 62% in 2020. These figures match contemporary level of steel production in developed countries.

During this period productions of high-quality long-cut rails, thick-wall pipes for the fuel and energy complex, plates for pipes industry etc. will be developed. Extension of production of high-quality flats for the automotive industry is also expected.
