Severstal begins supply of unique cryogenic steel for new LNG production and storage facilities
PAO Severstal, one of the world's leading vertically integrated steel and mining companies, is pleased to announce that it has begun the supply of construction elements for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage facility made of cryogenic low-carbon steel with a 9% nickel content.
The products will be used in the construction of a LNG plant which Gazprom is building in Portovaya, in the Leningrad Region. The first 60-ton product batch has already been delivered to the customer. Within the agreement, Severstal plans to supply approximately 700 tons of steel.
Severstal has begun producing innovative products as a part its import substitution program for construction materials run in partnership with Gazprom. Cryogenic steel has high resistance to the cold, retaining its plasticity and strength even at low temperatures.
The steel was produced by Mill 2800 at CherMK (part of Severstal’s Russian Steel division). It will also be possible to produce the metal at CherMK’s Mill 5000, located in Kolpino, Saint-Petersburg. Further processing of the metal is carried out using high-tech equipment at the Kolpino Steel Service Center, where the metal undergoes blasting, priming, chamfering and rolling.
Dmitry Goroshkov, Severstal’s Head of Marketing, commented:
“Severstal believes that close cooperation between producers will achieve effective import substitution, including in the development of the LNG market. Severstal’s facilities have the real potential to help support this opportunity. Our strategy today is focused both on supplying rolled steel and providing our clients with complex solutions.”
